It is a structural derivative of carbamazepine, with an extra oxygen atom to the benzylcarboxamide group. The presence of an extra oxygen atom in the structure reduces the susceptibility of the drug to hepatic metabolism, leading to prolonged pharmacological action or half life of the drug.
